Welcome to the Stone Sculpture and Art Gallery of Alan R Nicholls.
My formative years were spent in Scotland where I completed a a Master of Arts degree at Glasgow
University, and then followed a career in University Management as a Senior
Analyst and Finance Manager.
My life as a sculptor began in 2004, during six years living in the South Island of New Zealand. I was struck deeply by the work of New Zealand carvers, its deep resonances with ancestry and the natural world, and immediately began to study stone art sculpture to an advanced level with a traditional New Zealand carver. I have continued to be instructed and inspired by the indigenous myths, legends and traditions of Britain and New Zealand, and my own Celtic heritage. I exhibited stone carvings in Christchurch galleries (Arts En Vogue, Cave Rock), and worked from the Christchurch Arts Centre, also working on commissions. Returning from Aotearoa in 2010, I live and work in North Dorset. I hand select finest quarried stone, whether it be Marnhull, Bath, or Oamaru Stone from the Pacific coastline. Latterly I trained in the carving of Italian Carrara Marble. Keep an eye on this site for new work in this medium.
